TIME CAPSULE – A 1957 PORSCHE SPEEDSTER BARN FIND
This speedster ended its racing career in 1975 when ED PARLETT gave up racing. The speedster ran in the 60’s and 70’s with Bruce Jennings, George Frey, Lake Underwood and Ray Kraftson at the big name east coast tracks. Ed got a1st at Thompson and a 1st at Breyer. After spending 33 years in a barn in Quakertown near to New York the speedster returned to Germany in 2008.
I was so enthusiastic about the patina of the car and the original racing design that I decided to leave it that way. Good decision! You have to know that a Speedster was traded relatively expensive even 10 years ago and therefore all available vehicles came immediately into an extensive restoration. Not so this one! I was obsessed with the idea to research the history of the car.
After a long search, I found Ed Parlett in 2012 in Eastern, Maryland and visited him twice. With the help of some friends, we made a documentary about the car, and the old racers from the 60’s and 70’s. A year later, we visited the Porsche Werk in Stuttgart and met former employees of Porsche and Reutter from the 50’s.
25 hours of footage has been created since then, a book, two cartons with old racing documents and notes and some racing gear from Ed are brought together. Even a diecast model car (scale 1:43) was released in a limited edition of 500 vehicles from the traditionel german brand SCHUCO.
It has become a special relationship – I could sell every other car again but not this one here! Ed passed away in 2013 but it is as if I have now become part of its long story that is not over yet…
